Introduction

Hello class! I am a double major in Psychology and Biology with a minor in Religious Studies. I am currently in my fifth year here at the University of Oklahoma. I transferred here my Sophomore year from Texas Tech. I am a medical school applicant so I have a lot of school left! I am hoping to be either a Psychiatrist or an Obstetrician. I am graduating this May and hope to start medical school this coming fall.

I was born in Michigan, however,  I moved to Texas when I was two years old so I consider myself a Texan. I graduated high school when I was 17 years old so I will only be 22 when I graduate from OU. It is my plan to attend Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and live in Ft. Worth. I am from Colleyville, which is only about 20 minutes from downtown Ft. Worth! I hope to practice medicine in Texas so that I am able to work with hispanic populations because many of them live in underrepresented communities that need physicians.

Traveling is my main hobby. I studied abroad with the department of Religious Studies in June 2012 and lived in Israel for a month. I’ve also been going to Mexico at least once a year every year since I was 12 years old. In 2013 and 2014 I went to Honduras for a Medical Brigade where we provided healthcare for communities where some of the people have never even seen a physician before.  Public health is an extremely important concept to me and I also plan to pursue a masters in Public Health while working on my doctorate.

Here is a picture of me at a school in Amapala, Honduras with a little boy. My team and I taught these children how to brush their teeth and wash their hands.

  1. Hi Courtney! Your degree sounds pretty interesting! Psychology and Biology are both very interesting areas, and Religious studies would be a really cool subject to learn about. I am also graduating in May, but I'm not going to graduate school just yet because I need work experience for MBA programs. Texas is awesome! I'm also from near Fort Worth (Roanoke if you've heard of the town!). I'm sure you are excited to move back to Texas for medical school! It's really awesome that you have such a specific area you want to work with, and you will definitely be making a huge difference in communities. Considering you've been to Mexico each year since you were 12 and also went to Honduras a few times do you speak Spanish well? That will be a great skill for what you plan on doing! Good luck this semester!

  2. Hi again, Courtney! Your Introduction here is so inspiring: I really hope that your medical career will allow you to keep on traveling... and of course HEALING (in every sense of the word) is one of the great themes of religion, so I can see that this is all interconnected for you. Wonderful!

Something important here: don't forget to add a LABEL "Introduction" to this post so that people will be able to find it in your blog navigation! They will be looking for this post all semester long since it is part of the blog commenting every week. :-)

  4. Hi Courtney!
It’s always nice to meet a fellow student who is also going the pre-med route! Congrats on graduating this May, and I also hope that you get into medical school this fall! I think that it is very admirable of you to strive to work with the underprivileged of our society, and it’s definitely something I’ve started looking into myself. I also love to travel, but have not had much opportunity to do so. Working with the Medical Brigade is something that I’ve always wanted to do, and your picture is awesome! I hope this semester goes well for you, and good luck with your future studies!

  5. Hello Courtney!

I give you props for dedicating yourself to years of school in order to pursue your goals! I have always generally enjoyed learning, but I am also very ready and excited to start my occupation. I love to travel also. I really hope to see as many cultures as I can while I am young and able to be active. I wish to explore outside of the U.S more (Israel must have been really neat) and take in all the beauty that this world can have.

  6. Hey Courtney!

It is always great to meet someone who loves to travel as much as me! I hope to one day be able to visit every continent and every Spanish speaking country! I am jealous that you are graduating in May! I will end up being here a few extra years. I think it is awesome that you went to Honduras to provide healthcare for people who may have never gotten the opportunity to receive any!

  7. Hi Courtney! Wow thats amazing that you want to go to medical school and practice medicine. That is a real challenge. I agree with you that many hispanics do live in underrepresented communities and that is great you want to help them out! Studying religious studies is awesome! I took a class over religion studies for my political science class and learned a lot about religion, although the class mainly focused on religions in America and court cases that dealt with first amendment violations. It's great that you want to be a doctor and travel around to help people. We need more people like you in this world.

  8. Courtney,

I also transferred from going to a different University for a year. I went to OSU my freshman year and I am glad that I ended up transferring to OU. My brother is in his fourth year of medical school and I commend anyone who wants and goes to medical school! I would love to travel, my church traveled to Cuba this summer and I would love to travel with them next time they go. I think that is something special that you went to Honduras and helped children learn how to brush their teeth and wash their hands.

  11. Hi Courtney!

Nice to 'meet' you! I bet your studies are SO interesting with psychology as a major and BIO + RELS as your minors! And WOW Med school is going to be way intense on top of a masters in public health, but so rewarding I bet :) Sounds like you have a wonderful future ahead of you, and you're making it happen. Good for you!

I hope that you succeed in all your endeavors and I know that you have and will make a difference for people who really need it! Best of luck to you!

  14. Hey Courtney!
I think that it is so interesting that you double majored in Psychology and Biology. I think that both of those fields are so interesting so it would be so cool to major in both! I feel that those would both also really help you with your goal of going to medical school! I hope that you get into the school that you are wanting to get into! I think that your goals are awesome and wish you luck with your future!

  15. Hello Courtney! Your future plans sound amazing! I definitely agree that public health is so important, and I do wish more health professionals felt as passionate about it as you do. It’s so amazing that you go to Mexico so often! I went last summer and I absolutely love it there (except the humidity gets overwhelming sometimes). Hope you had a great spring break!

  16. Hi Courtney! A double major in Psychology and Biology sounds very hectic! I share the passion of traveling with you. I'm going on a medical mission trip to Honduras this year with Global Brigades and I'm super excited about it! Good luck with your future goals!

  17. Hello Courtney! I'm going to Honduras with Global Medical Brigades as well this summer! I'm super excited about it!! Your majors in Psychology and Biology are very complimentary to your medical career. Osteopathic medicine is a great field. I love how they focus on the holistic approach rather than just focusing on just one part of the body like the MDs.

  18. Phycology and biology…sounds super hectic! Props to you! Any restaurants I need to visit in Fort Worth or places to shop?! Wow traveling to Mexico since you were 12, that is awesome! Volunteer work is such an amazing feeling, I can only imagine what it was like to get to travel and volunteer with the Medical Brigade. Best of luck on the rest of the semester!!

  19. Hi Courtney.
I think it is so cool that you’ve been able to travel to Israel, Mexico and Honduras; what a great experience that must have been. Best of luck with medical school! I have a friend attending now and he has zero free time. It’s quite a commitment, but I am sure you will do just fine. I hope you enjoy what is left of the semester.
